Hilo Bay Watershed
Advisory Group
The Hilo Bay Watershed Advisory Group
[HBWAG] is an advocate for the
sustainability of the Hilo Bay Watershed
ecology, serving the community by building
partnerships and applying scientifically
based methods to collect watershed and
water quality information to address,
prevent, mitigate, and resolve watershed
and water quality issues. The Group?s
overarching strategies are:
? To
seek
partnerships
and engage
in collaborative problem
identification and solutions.
? To promote
comprehensive
watershed management
principles
to identify and resolve
watershed and water quality
problems and propose solutions
based on scientifically based
information and research.
How to sustain healthy watersheds:
? Minimize use of pesticides and
fertilizers
? Remove waterway obstructions
? Minimize exposed soil areas on your
property
? Do not dump waste or chemicals into
storm drains
? Pick up litter/debris and dispose of
properly (including pet waste)
? Re-cycle motor oil at authorized
stations
? Re-cycle hazardous household
materials
? To strive to increase HBWAG
membership and to foster
community participation
in
learning about and improving
conditions in the watershed.

HBWAG History

The HBWAG was formed during the
public input process phase of the Hilo
Bay Watershed Project Public Input
Final Report in July, 2003 to address
the EPA?s list of impaired waters in the
watershed. The HBWAG consists of
volunteers who represent the local
community in addressing watershed
and water quality problems. The
HBWAG partnered with the University
of Hawaii, the Hawaii Department of
Health, and the US Army Corps of
Engineers to facilitate and draft a
restoration/management plan for the
Hilo Bay watershed. Since its inception,
the HBWAG has sponsored beach
cleanups, provided a forum for
ecological, scientific, historical and
cultural, and marine biology lectures on
Hilo Bay and nearby waters and
beaches, and has recently established
a monthly informational and
educational forum through NOAA and
the Mokup?papa Discovery Center
located in downtown Hilo.
