- The Hilo Bay Water Quality Buoy: A New Community Resource (Mokupapapa Discovery Center, 308 Kamehameha Avenue , from 03-11-2010, 06:00 PM to 03-11-2010, 07:30 PM)
- The University of Hawaii Hilo will deploy a water quality buoy in Hilo Bay that will provide water quality data for the region.
- A Sanctuary for Hawaii’s Humpback Whales (Mokupapapa Discovery Center, 308 Kamehameha Avenue , from 02-11-2010, 06:00 PM to 02-11-2010, 07:30 PM)
- February is Humpback Whale Month in Hawai’i. Join us for this special event about Humpback Whales and the Hawaii National Marine Sanctuary. It will open with sanctuary volunteer, Alex Sheftic sharing information on the sanctuary and humpback whales and be followed by the video, Ocean Voyager.

- Pauline Lilinoe Keliipio-Young will share stories of life on Mokuola (Coconut Island) and the changes which have occurred in and about Hilo Bay since the days of sugar cane plantations. John Kahiapo of DNLR will join Lilinoe to discuss the importance of fishing then and today.

- Dr. J. B. Friday, the UH Extension Forester will present: Forests and Watersheds. Forests are good for the watershed, but what effect do trees in the forest actually have on rainfall, stream flow, and flooding? Learn about this and much more.

- The 2009 UH Hilo Sustainability Fair will take place on September 4th at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
- Impacts of an Invasive Nitrogen-fixing Tree on the Ecological Functions of the Wailuku River (Mokupapapa Discovery Center, 308 Kamehameha Avenue , from 08-13-2009, 06:00 PM to 08-13-2009, 07:30 PM)
- Dr. MacKenzie, Research Ecologist with the Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry will present the results of his two-year study that compared leaf litter breakdown of the native ohia to the invasive N-fixer albizia to determine if inputs of N-rich leaves affect the food web structure, organic matter cycling, and nutrient dynamics. He will reveal how albizia trees are affecting Hawaii's streams and what this means in terms of stream function and water quality.

- Cecile Walsh with the State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources will present: Invasive Algae in the Main Hawaiian Islands.
- RELATE Project Overview (Mokupapapa Discovery Center, from 06-11-2009, 06:00 PM to 06-11-2009, 07:30 PM)
- The Rivers Environments Landuse & Ahupua'a Technologies (RELATE) Project will be presented. This project provides high school students with meaningful field experiences by relating human action on land to contamination of the Wailuku river system and the effects on Hilo Bay. The students will present summaries of their class projects.
- An art contest celebrating native species (Volcano Art Center, from 05-29-2009, 09:00 AM to 05-30-2009, 05:00 AM)
- The Natural Area Reserves System, the Volcano Art Center Gallery, and the Three Mountain Alliance watershed partnership are proud to present the first juried art exhibition on the Island of Hawaii celebrating our native flora and fauna.

- The 2009 Sustainable Design Assessment Team Program is a community assistance program that focuses on principles of sustainability. In May, the American Institute of Architects will send a multi-disciplinary team of professionals to Hilo to work with local implementation partners and stakeholders in a 3-day charrette (collaborative planning workshop). The public is invited to participate as public input is a key component of this program.

- Nautilus Dive Center and Hilo Bay Watershed Advisory Group will be hosting a cleanup of the recreational debris at 4 Mile Beach as part of the annual Dive For Earth Day event.
- Friends of Hakalau Forest Talks (Institute of Pacific Island Forestry, 60 Nowelo Street, from 04-11-2009, 01:30 PM to 04-11-2009, 03:30 PM)
- Two great speakers, one speaking on Ancient Ohia Trees of Hakalau Forest and the other on Forest Birds of Hakalau will be featured at this annual membership meeting of Freinds of Hakalau Forest.
- Soils of Hawaii and the Hilo Bay Watershed (Mokupapapa Discovery Center, from 04-09-2009, 06:00 PM to 04-09-2009, 07:30 PM)
- Amy Saunders, a soil scientist with USDA will provide an overview of soils and geology across the island and then focus on those in the Hilo Bay watershed. Participants will have a chance to experience the texture of a variety of soil types through hands-on activities.
