There are currently nine watershed partnerships accross the state where
landowners are working together to protect mauka forested watershed for
water recharge and conservation values.  On Hawaii island, the Three
Mountain Alliance is a watershed partnership of federal, state and
private landowners that includes over one million acres across Mauna Loa,
Kilauea, and Hualalai.  A new partnership is also poised to form for
Mauna Kea.  Coordinated management across these landscapes is critical to
sustain adequate quality and quantity of water and to provide important
habitat for a wide diversity of native plants and animals, including
endangered species.  In addition, the health of these lands is strongly
connected with the quality of life for people and local communities.
Private and public landowners in this region have recognized the value of
collaboration to address shared management challenges such as invasive
 plants and animals and fire.
