EDH2025 2nd Annual Meeting - Tara Anderson
The second annual, EDH 2025 Hilo Vision Keeper’s Town Meeting, occurred on Sept. 30th, 2008, at the Palace Theater. The town meeting started with a presentation of booths inside the entrance of the Palace and directly outside. These booths and their representatives asked for ideas from the community and showcased what the present Vision Keepers, and their partners were interested in doing. A discussion was later held in the main theater with Jackie Pualani Johnson, mediating the discussion. The panelists who led the discussion were Genevieve Cain, Sudha Achar, Sig Zane, and Christopher J. Yuen. The goals of the Hilo Vision Keepers, as presented on their powerpoint, were to create economic vitality, preserve our environment, strengthen and make our community sustainable, enhance education, culture, and the arts, promote health and safety, and manage growth, particularly in downtown Hilo.
2nd Zero Waste Talk - Tara Anderson
Recycle Hawaii’s second Zero Waste Conference talk in Hilo was attended by a small group of Hilo residents at the Naniloa Hotel, on 17 September, 2008. The topic of this lecture and discussion was Special Discards, though the discussion seemed to be directed toward any concern the group had with recycling in Hawaii. Richard Anthony and Associates once again led much of the discussion.
Zero Waste Talk
The Zero Waste Conference talk on Reusing and Recycling, at Mokup?papa Discovery Center, was put on by Recycle Hawaii and Richard Anthony, and Associates, on September 15th. This lecture and community discussion gave the community of Hilo an opportunity to be enlightened about what they could do lessen the amount of waste that is produced on this island and to voice their concerns. Leading the discussion was Richard Anthony, Lynne James, Laura Anthony, and other representatives. Submitted by Tara Anderson.
Watershed Partnerships
The Hilo Bay Watershed Advisory Group’s General meeting on September 11th, 2008, at the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center, featured speakers from three different watershed partnership groups doing work on Hawaii Island. Report submitted by Tara Anderson.
Candidates Forum well attended
On June 16th the Hilo Bay Watershed Advisory Group (HBWAG) hosted a Mayoral Candidates Forum with keynote speakers Drs. Jim and Sonia Juvik of the University of Hawaii at Hilo Environmental Studies and Geography Department.
Birnie talk well-attended
Ian Birnie, Hilo Harbormaster, drew over 100 people for his "Historic Hilo Bay" talk on May 8th.
Storm drain stenciling continues
"Do Not Dump" notices are being stenciled at all street-side storm drains.
"Year of the Reef" marked by beach clean-up
The Hilo Bay Watershed Advisory Group and the Nautilus Dive Shop co-sponsored a beach clean-up at Four-Mile Beach.
Brittni Paiva - Keoki Kahumoku Benefit Concert
Ukulele and slack-key guitar artists Brittni Paiva and Keoki Kahumoku offer benefit concert for Hilo Bay Watershed Advisory Group.
Earth Day, Ocean Day
The Hilo Bay Watershed Advisory Group participated in both Earth Day and Ocean Day events.
